Successful exam completes eight year-long process

ORLANDO, FL, 02 JUNE 2010 – Announced today was Tim Swieter’s successful passing of the State of Florida’s Professional Engineering examination, achieving a goal set more than eight years ago.

The Professional Engineer (PE) designation is among the most respected of professional credentials, licensing the holder to practice engineering in the state of licensure. The terms ‘Professional’ or ‘Licensed Engineer’ are terms legally reserved for use by a PE. In general, it is a requirement of the applicable United States ‘authority having jurisdiction’ that submitted drawings bear the stamp or seal of a licensed professional engineer.

In most states, for a business to include “Engineering” in its name, or to state that it offers engineering services, that business must be licensed as an "Engineering Business". In order to do that they must employ at least one Professional Engineer. Legally, most engineering work which has a bearing on safety must be performed in the "responsible charge” of a Professional Engineer.

To sit for the day-long PE exam, the applicant must first graduate from a board approved 4-year accredited engineering program and pass a similar all-day Fundamentals of Engineering examination. Upon approval of a subsequent four years of qualifying engineering experience and the recommendation of three licensed engineers, the future PE may sit for the Professional Engineering examination.
